Boardercorss and Skiercross at Bromley 1/29

Jesse Kunkowski in the start gate for Heat 1

Another brilliant day for the KWSC/KMS Snowboard Team at the USASA Boardercross and Skiercross events at Bromley. Today's course was a HUGE step up from the last race 2 weeks ago. Much bigger rollers, more jumps and drops at the end of most banked turns, it was clear that the riders with the best technique and skill would win. Luckily, we've been training hard!

-KWSC Freestyle Skier Mazie Haden took first in the Skier 10-12 Girls Division, as well as first Overall for Skier Girls

-KMS Freestyle Skier Taylor Doxsee took First in Skier 16-18 Boys and Overall Boys

-KMS Snowboard Rookie Lauren Habony took third in her first contest ever- way to go Lauren!!!

-KWSC Snowboard Athlete Alex Sheppard survived a multi-rider pile-up crash in his second heat and held on for third in the finals!

-KWSC Snowboard Athlete Abby Lancour survived three heats to land in fourth place in a stacked Youth (14-15) Girls Division

-KWSC Snowboard Athlete Kamran Gossieaux had a great first heat, placing second, but was eliminated in the second heat.

-KWSC Snowboard Athlete Jesse Kunkowski looked promising in time trails, but had a the wipeout of the day during his first heat.

we're back at it again tomorrow, so be ready for more pictures and words Sunday evening. GREAT JOB TEAM!!

Droppin

Sam: Dropping in the Woods

KWSC/KMS Dominates Bromley Boarder/skercross

Conner Phillips in BX time trails on Monday

KWSC/KMS Snowoard Team Dominates USASA Southern Vermont Series Boardercross

Under bluebird skies and cold temps, KWSC/KMS Snowboarders shutdown the competition on Monday 1/17. Despite a crowded roster and tough competition, the riders raced through time trails and several heats to bring home Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

-Mazie Hayden, age 11 from Pittsfield, VT ran away with 1st place in the Girl's Skier 10-12 division
-Ton Skoric, age 7 from Rutland, VT earned a 1st place victory in the boys Ruggie (7 and under) division
-Shaelyn Humora, age 12 from Morrisville, PA scored 2nd place in the girls Breaker (12-13) division and was the 3rd fastest girl regardless of age.
-KMS Student Conner Phillips, age 14 from Fair Haven, NJ took 2nd in the boys Youth (14-15) division just behind the 2010 USASA National Champion in his age division.

Other notables include fast trials and great efforts but unfortunate heats for Abby Lancour (14 from Rutland, VT), Kamran Gossieaux (14 from Andover, MA) and Jesse Kunkowski (11 from Rutland, VT).

Under heavy snow and wind, day 2 of the Boarder/skiercross saw KWSC/KMS again with a strong showing.

-Mazie Hayden stepped on the podium again with a 2nd place.
-Shaelyn Humora had a repeat of day 1 with a 2nd place and 3rd overall.
-Conner Phillips took 3rd place
-Jesse Kunkowski stepped up his game with a 2nd place showing in the boy's Menehune (10-11) division.

Other notables include a fast time trail from Sam Hayden, age 12 from Pittsfield, VT.

K-town Showdown #2

Peter Cimmino 3rd Place Men Open Snwoboard

Maggie Leon (left) 3rd place Open Women Snowboard

Joey Leon 1st place Grom Snowboard

Will Stellar (black sweatshirt) 2nd Place Grom Snowboard (not in picture: Will's broken wrist in cast)

Event #2 of the K-town Showdown took place on a cold and clear day on Mouse Run. KWSC/KMS Snowboard Team represented in huge numbers, and stole the day! The 1st heat at the top of the course saw a pole jam or C box choice both of which flowed into a street style down bar. Joey Leon ruled the day with switch backside 180s off the pole jam followed by smooth boardslides. Will Stellar (defying the odds) pulled a sweet 360 off the pole jam, and some nice swicth ups on the down rail. Other higlights from the first heat- Alex Sheppard's grabs off the pole jam, Maggie's smooth 50-50s, Peter Cimmino's pretzel out on the down rail and Ben VanPut's switch-up on the down bar.
Heat two really saw KWSC rider's stepping it up as Cimmino crushed the flatbox to down box combo feature. 180 combos, tail presses and all kinds of variations were thrown down. George McKeever-Parkes nailed 50-50's down both boxes while Harrison Pelletz nose-to-tail-pressed the boxes. Ryan Sihler came through with a board slide on both boxes as Sean Grondin threw a super stylee frontside overcrook on the 2nd box. Christian Vosburgh and Cameron Slenker were working on some really cool tricks, but lacked the consistency to make the podium today. Next time guys!
Coaches Gillian and Evan were super proud of everyone's effort- and so was I!!! Way to push yourselves and give it your best shot KWSC!!!

Another Great weekend of Shred

The KWSC/KMS Snowboard Team did not have any riders competing this weekend, but don't think we didn't ride and train hard!

Saturday brought 4-5 inches of fresh snow, which wasted little time in ripping up! Gillian and KC's group were spotted charging Ovation, including Lower O, one of the steepest trails on the mountain! KC's group continued to hunt double diamonds and ticked the Vertigo Headwall and other secret spots. Gill's group took off in another direction, possibly headed for the woods.

The afternoon saw tracked up pow, but a great time for Stash and Dew Tour Pipe runs! From KC's gorup, all riders dropped in FROM THE DECK! We worked our way up from the bottom of the pipe, and success was had by all!

Sunday saw timberline laps for Evan's group with some nice 360 nose grabs on all kinds of spin variations on and off of rails. Gillian's riders spent the morning preparing for the Ktown Showdown next weekend while all racers (SL, GS and BX) rode with KC and tried to master the ancient art of eurocarving.

Keep your fingers crossed for next weekend- we've got Ktown Showdown and USASA BX, followed by the Dew Tour 1/22-23!!

USASA Slalom Double Header at Bromley

Nikki S. (on left with blue beanie) shows off her 2 Bronze medals for Sunday's Slalom

Sunday January 2, 2011 was the KWSC/KMS Snowboard Team's first Slalom of the year, a double header held at Bromley. With warm temps and granular snow, the conditions were good for the race, but certainly favored the athletes riding on alpine setups.

Sam "Lightning" Hayden performed admirably again against his USASA National rival competitors and raced to a solid 4th place in his Breaker (12-13) age group.

Nikki "Thunder" Sardelli also had a good day, showing exceptional improvement in her racing skills since her first event several weeks ago. Nikki scored the Bronze in both races.

In the extremely competitive Youth (14-15) division, Kamran "Hurricane" Gossieaux also had a promising day, placing fifth in race 1 and placing 4th in race 2 by 0.3 seconds after a near fall. Rounding out the KWSC/KMS team finishes was Alex "Tornado" Sheppard who nabbed a 7th in race 1 and really stepping it up to nab 5th in race 2 just behind Gossieaux.

Way to go KMS racers!!!
